Never thought I’d see this. Never thought I’d care even a little.
I… I kinda liked it? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a dumb movie but it’s smart about it? It also looks way better than I would have expected. The director and DP actually gave a shit, which is a nice add. But while the plot itself is so dumb, it manages to be deceptively smart about the characters, which is really what the movie is centered on.
It’s not a movie about the Power Rangers kicking faces and stabbing a monster after pushing it into cardboard buildings, it’s about a group of misfits, outcasts, and fuckups, who learn not just to work as a team, but as a team of friends who are each willing to make a sacrifice for the others. And that’s how it largely spends its time.
It also has absolutely no compunction about just how silly the premise is, it wears that like a badge of honor. I shit you not, there’s a moment where a van full of singing nuns is in danger, and it felt like one of the truest moments of the movie. It absolutely knows what it is and isn’t afraid to remind you.
Really the weirdest part is that despite the acknowledged silliness and time spent building a family, the dark and gritty Bay-Transformers visual design felt out of place. I understand why they chose that regardless, because large amounts of the audience’s perception of a movie lives and dies on the surface level texture, but it honestly seemed incongruous.
So yeah, I uh, I actually kinda liked it. Not a strong like, but I appreciate it far more than I anticipated.
Also one of the main characters is on the Autism spectrum, the film openly acknowledges it, gives the audience a quick rundown of what it means in the form of the character doing that for another, and it’s cool about it? Granted it’s the character who’s also a technical wizard, so that part is… ehhh… but still an autistic main character, who becomes a superhero, who isn’t othered by the nature of the film, and who the audience will probably love.
That’s pretty neat. Props to you Power Rangers, props to you.
I like it.
